Our Review of Paris Orly Airport

Our Review of Paris Orly Airport

At Plan Your Trips, we have analyzed hundreds of airports around the world, gaining a clear understanding of what users expect when visiting an airport. With this know-how, we have created this guide, placing passengers at the forefront of everything, aiming to simplify and enhance the airport experience.

In this guide, our goal is to present information in a manner that is both quick and reliable. Recognizing that passengers often have limited time and may be in a hurry, we strive to ensure that they do not waste time unnecessarily.

Another key focus of our guide is to highlight the strengths of the airport and also the weaknesses, and in some cases, offer recommendations to travelers. In alignment with this approach, we provide users with aggregated information on delays and on-time performance, analyzing both airlines and individual flights.

Pros and Cons of Paris Orly Airport

PROs

Location: Orly Airport is easily accessible for passengers going to or from the city because it is situated just 13 kilometers (8 miles) south of downtown Paris.

Hub: ORY Airport is a hub for Air Franc, easyJet Europe, TAP Portugal, Transavia France, Vueling and a focus city for Air Caraïbes, Corsair International, easyJet, French Bee, La Compagnie, Royal Air Maroc and TUI fly Belgium.

Upgraded Facilities: The airport has had extensive remodeling, which has improved passenger comfort and efficiency by modernizing check-in rooms and upgrading terminals. All terminals are more smoothly integrated with the new design.

Efficient Transport Connections: Public transportation alternatives that connect Orly to central Paris include the Orlybus, the RER B train line, the Orlyval light rail, and taxis. Travelers can easily choose an option that meets their needs.

Modern Amenities: Many amenities are available at Orly Airport, such as duty-free shopping, eateries, retail stores, and free Wi-Fi all throughout the place. For business travelers and those looking for additional luxury, lounges and VIP services are also offered.

CONS

Busiest Airport:  Before the construction of Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG), Orly was the main airport in Paris. Even with the shift of most international traffic to CDG Airport, Orly remains the busiest French airport for domestic traffic.

Limited Long-Haul Flights: Compared to Charles de Gaulle, Orly offers fewer long-haul international flights, focusing more on regional European and North African destinations. Travelers needing global connections may need to fly through CDG.

Overcrowding During Peak Times: Orly Airport can get crowded during rush hour, especially on holidays and during the summer travel season. This can result in longer wait times for security and check-in.

Delays at Security and Immigration: Passengers may have to wait longer at Orly security checks and immigration, particularly during periods of high travel demand or when security alerts are activated.

Mini-Guide of the Airport (2' Guide)

Terminals: Orly Airport consists of four terminals connected to each other called Orly 1-2-3-4. You may need to walk between certain areas after security, so make sure you know where your flight is leaving from. If necessary, shuttle services are offered between terminals, so allow additional time for transfers.

Transport to and from Paris: The Orlyval light rail connects Orly to the RER B train line, providing excellent access to Paris. Another practical alternative that gets you straight to Denfert-Rochereau in the heart of Paris is Orlybus. There are also plenty of accessible car rental businesses, and taxis. Check the transit timetables if you’re traveling after midnight since there could be fewer alternatives available.

Check-in Areas:  In Orly 1-2-3, check-in is located just after entering the terminal, with efficient access to security control. In Orly 4, automated check-in counters are on the level 1. It is important to check your terminal ahead of time considering the size of the airport.

Shops and Dining: There are several duty-free stores, eateries, and cafés in Orly. In addition to a range of stores offering gadgets, travel supplies, and souvenirs, there are fast food restaurants.

Family-Friendly Services: With amenities like kid-friendly play areas, baby changing stations, and special family check-in rooms, Orly is a family-friendly airport. For families with small children, these services contribute to a more comfortable travel experience.

Additional Information:

  • Accessibility: Orly Airport is equipped with facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, including wheelchair assistance, adapted restrooms, and priority security lanes.
  • Parking Options: Orly offers a range of parking services, from economy to premium, with shuttle buses running between the parking areas and the terminals for added convenience.

How we calculate On Time Performance

On various pages of our website, you will encounter a metric widely utilized in aviation and other forms of transportation known as OTP (On Time Performance). We believe that providing this metric assists passengers in planning their trips and exploring alternatives before purchasing their flight tickets.

We calculate the On Time Performance for all flights and airlines, when we have enough data to do so. In certain instances, it may not be feasible to accurately compute the On-Time Performance for a specific flight or airline due to inadequate or non-representative data, which could result in misleading conclusions.

Our calculation of On Time Performance and delay information solely relies on arrival times. This approach is chosen over calculating departure delays, as we consider arrival punctuality to be of primary concern to passengers.

The On Time Performance displayed on our website is calculated as follows:

  • On Time: Flights that arrive within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time, or earlier. In the absence of data for a specific flight, we assume the flight arrives on time, to avoid penalizing airlines for data unavailability.
  • Moderate Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay of 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Significant Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay of 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Major Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay exceeding 60 minutes.
  • Average Delay: The average delay is calculated by considering flights that arrive early as having a delay of 0 minutes. Early arrivals do not contribute to reducing the average delay calculation
